Steve Rubel makes a very interesting point about Google’s new search interface. He says:
Here’s what this means: no two people will see the same web. Once a single search would do the trick – and everyone saw the same results. That’s what made search engine optimization work. Now, with this, everyone is going to start tweaking their searches in real-time. The reason this is a game changer is feedback. When you get feedback, you change your behaviors.
via Google Instant Makes SEO Irrelevant – The Steve Rubel Stream.
His conclusion is that this effectively kills SEO, a tactic that companies like Demand Media and others have built their business on.
But will this really mean that it is no longer possible to game or influence how people interact with search? My guess is that smart SEO people will reverse engineer and test the new suggestion algorithms in the same way that page content has been adjusted to make it more search friendly. It’s not that SEO is dead but perhaps it has been reincarnated in a different form.

For all us Canadians, we are quickly establishing a reputation as a nation of resource extracting bottom feeders.
Tarnished Earth is a dramatic street gallery of photographs telling the story of the destruction of Canada’s boreal forest – a continuous belt of coniferous trees separating the tundra to the north and temperate rainforest and deciduous woodlands to the south. The exhibition will be open free to anyone walking along London’s South Bank for four weeks from 14 September 2010. The exhibition, which is being staged by The Co-operative, in conjunction with WWF-UK and Greenpeace, and will later tour cities across the UK, shows how the boreal forest is being flattened by the rush to extract oil from the tar sands just below its surface.

Follow The Media gives some additional background and insight into the Murdoch vs. NYTimes fight that is being fought across the pond.
Rupert Murdoch makes no secret the editorial changes he has made at his Wall Street Journal are intended to topple The New York Times as America’s newspaper of record. But the “Gray Lady” until now has mostly ginned and bared it but suddenly with an investigative report months in the making she has sunk her teeth viciously into Murdoch in the UK some 3,000 miles away from the main New York battlefield.
